I get to see this bird maybe once every 5 years so am happy when I do see it. Beautiful indigo bunting stoipped on it’s way through to who knows where to brighten my day.
Do you have birds you rarely see make an appearence in your area?
Yes the Bald Eagle. We see a pair about once a year. They are beautiful. Until we moved here, we had never seen one.
We are very fortunate to live near a wetlands/ swamp area that is habitat to many birds. Great blue herons nest there, I enjoy seeing these massive birds flying low overhead when i am out in the garden.
Not a rare bird, but I do enjoy when the hummers return & their stay all summer. Just spotted one (a teeny baby hummer) sitting on a low branch in the yard last week. Never would have spotted him if hubby hadn’t heard him buzzing over us first. Never have i been able to see a hummer sitting still & for long! I think he was studying us too.
Up on Old Bald Hill, where Eagles have nested, I was fortunate to see one the soaring overhead on a day that I was very down.
Not very good at knowing names of birds, I am still learning. I will look for indigo buntings now (after I look for their picture) as I am in NY state too.
Several years ago, I worked in an office park, and had a desk next to the window. Every year, we’d get an oriole teaching its young how to fly from the window ledge. We would also see scarlet tanagers in the woods that bordered the parking area. I haven’t seen either bird since I left that area.

We found a terrific web site to look up birds and plants, there’s even a “listen to” option! It’s www.nwf.org, the National Wildlife Federation site. There is also info on how to get your yard, no matter what size, certified as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat. You can create your own lists to keep track of what visits your yard. I highly recommend the site!
yes, i feed the birds from my townhouse, and see many local birds I never thought I would see in town. Me and my hubby sold our home last year, and are renting now. We have lots of fields around the other side of us and I’m so glad that we can hear all the beautiful sounds from morning till night.
