Have you ever lived in a bad neighborhood?

A couple of my first apartments were not in the best neighborhoods, but back then I wasn’t afraid at all and nothing horrible ever happened. But it was a high crime area. One of them was actually a house divided into 3 apartments, so there were neighbors within the same house. However, I didn’t own a car yet and had to take public transportation and that was a bit scary! Not because of the people on the bus, that was just an adventure, but because the bus would go into worse neighborhoods before it took you where you wanted to go. But I took it every day, several times a day to work and around. The bus stop to go to work was at the hospital and the bus stop on the way home was in a plaza, so no worries at the actual bus stop.

I’ve been fortunate to live in very nice areas other than those first couple of apartments. The little city I’m in doesn’t really have any neighborhoods I would consider all that bad. When our tire was flat and I called AAA, they asked if I was in a safe area. I said um, there isn’t anywhere in this city that would scare me if my car broke down. But I was in a parking lot a block away from home and sitting on a bench outside a grocery store. LOL But believe me, there is crime here and I probably should be afraid sometimes. I have to remind myself that danger is everywhere, kwim?

Yes. When we were first married we lived in a not so desirable part of town. I was only 18 though so I wasn’t scared of anything, too young and dumb! Now if you put me in that neighborhood I would be terrified.

We lived in this apartment when DH was in grad school where I was afraid to go out of the apartment alone…period.

No, not really. I grew up in the country on a farm. Lived in an apartment during college and my first years of teaching. But both were in small towns and safe. We moved to the country and lived in a nice area. Now we are on a nice street in our new town. Grateful that I have not had to put up with the fear of a bad neighborhood.

Oh I don’t know if it’s me or what but bad neighbors and neighbors! Several times I’ve lived next to drug dealers. I have started to think I am a bad neighbor magnate.

Oh Heaven! You reminded me of the time we rented a basement suite just after DH graduated from University. We’d moved cross country and were living downstairs from the landlord’s son in a house across from a school yard. We weren’t allowed to use the laundry facilities in the house. We wondered why and one day DH peaked his head into the laundry room. It was a grow-op! We told the landlord and the kid was gone in a hurry.
