Frugal moving

See below.

I’m on my iPhone an the format for the forum is weird. I’m just wondering what you would consider a frugal move?

I checked on UHaul today online and they quote $5000-8000 CAD to move us, depending if we do it ourselves or they drive. Man! Even UHaul is expensive these days!

That doesn’t include packing supplies or gas.

I think it is really hard to move frugally, with the exception of just doing it all yourself
But even then, there is the rentals, etc.
We’ve moved four times
Once we moved ourselves (Twice if you count moving into our original house when we first got married from our respective homes) and the three other times, we hired movers
It was one area where it was worth the money to pay someone to do it, because he and his brothers could only lift so much before people’s backs were hurting, etc
However, we did get quotes for the lowest prices we could find
Around here, however, you can rent a U-Haul and then go down by the train station and pick up some day workers to help you with the move
You gotta pay them, but not as much as you’d pay a moving company
Are you near a college or university? Maybe you could hire some college guys (or even high school guys) to come and help out?
Would probably still be a savings

I’ve only made one major move (all the rest were small amounts of personal stuff, a wee bit of furniture, and a pickup.). This major move required a horse trailer, pickups, a U Haul and several trips, plus a bunch of friends. Honestly, I don’t know how much it cost us. Although I yearn to move back to where we used to live, at our age, I’ll not do it. Too much hassle.

Well I did the research for UHaul and discovered it would cost between $5000-8000 for us to move ourselves, and we’d be renting a 20’ truck plus pulling a car behind us. Not sure I trust DH’s driving that much to do that. Actually they thought we’d need a 26’ trailer, but I view it as incentive to really unload stuff. We don’t want most of the furniture we currently have, and the area we are moving to has an IKEA, so we know we can get some stuff relatively inexpensively.

Still waiting for the estimate from the mover who was here the other day. He’s not in a hurry, seeing as the move is about six months away! I like to be prepared. It would be nice to know how much to budget for the move and to start saving for it. Though to be truthful, we have just decided to start saving NOW! Like starting two or three months ago.

I made a list of items I think we will have to move in the car. The mover at least recognized a spinning wheel when he saw it. I don’t trust them to pack my rug hooking frame and cutter though…or the drum carder come to think of it. I think it’s going to be a loaded car. We’ve been told to take all jewelry and valuable with us. There’s no room in the car for all that. DH is refusing to put a hitch on the car so we can haul a small trailer. Hmm…thinking…
