Hi everyone. It looks like we’ll be moving cross country sometime in the next 2 years. We’ve lived here 21 years and have accumulated a lot of stuff.
We’re moving closer to our grown children, whom we’ve already talked to about this. They are excited about us potentially moving closer. It is a higher cost of living area, but house prices are much lower.
With DH retiring it is making more and more sense to move closer to them. We’ve been talking to insurance brokers and our financial planner and they’ve been advising it because I’m basically uninsurable due to health issues.
So my question is: Where do we start? What downsizing and moving tips do you have that you can share?
While I haven’t experienced this, I have had several friends who have. Once they found their new homes, they went thru all their belongings and got rid of things that no one wanted. After deciding what furniture to keep they sold the rest thru a local consignment shop here in town. The shop even took their nice china and crystal and sold it for them. One couple downsized to a smaller house so they kept lawn equipment and some outdoor furniture while the other couple went to a condo and only kept a minimum of outdoor furniture and planters. Another thing they both did was to go thru all of their holiday decorations.( That’s something I should probably do now!)
Thanks Georgiapeach1. I think we’ll have to sell our home before buying a new home. In the interim we’ll be staying in an apartment in all probability.
Because it’s cross country I checked Numbeo to compare the cost of living in the two communities. It’s 25% higher in the new one, BUT people earn $700 less per month in take home pay. And the average take home pay is about 3/4 what we have for take home. So that’s good.
