And what ways do you stay warm or keep the house feeling comfortable during winter?
Do you put up window insulation/plastic/bubble wrap?
I get cold very easily. But I don’t like cranking up the heat. I don’t mind turning it down during the day. But the bedrooms here get really cold, so I don’t like to keep the thermostat turned down too low.
I do use draft stoppers under my doors. I have to. So much cold air comes through under our doors. We have three doors that lead outside. Our house was built in the 50s.
We have a dog that has to go outside often, so the cold air comes in a lot more than I’d like it to.
Last year, I was all about my fleece jacket. I wore it all of the time. It’s far warmer than a sweater or even a sweatshirt. I need to get a nice pair of fuzzy socks.
I open the blinds during the day to get the heat from the sun. And I definitely drink a ton of hot drinks. We’ve already gone through a lot of hot cocoa with the cold weather.
Yes. With winter temperatures making it to -50C with the wind chill we weatherize our home. We live in a 1928 home, with the original single pane windows. We make sure we leave the storm windows on all winter.
We put flannel sheets on the bed and add a wool Hudson’s Bay blanket to the bed. Best wedding gift ever! It’s lasted 36 years and still has lots of time left in it. We have another one tucked away (we inherited Mom’s as well) for when it gets really cold in January.
We keep sheepskin slippers by the door and have knit slippers for guests.
Some our windows - the ones that have sheers that remain closed all year - have plastic between the windows and the sheers.
We also use rope weatherstripping around the window and door trim to keep out cold drafts. Plus we, too, have draft stoppers under the exterior doors.
We also made an insulated wood block for our fireplace, so cold air doesn’t come down the fireplace chimney and freeze us out in winter.
We don’t winterize the house, but we do pull out the extra blankets and start wearing layers.
I love the idea of the wool blanket on the bed, however, I am highly allergic to wool, so much so that we don’t have wool ANYTHING in the house. I think it would solve a lot of winter problems, but I just can’t do it.
Our house was built in 1980. It was decently insulated, but Hubs decided it needed more. Now it’s hard to get the temp down low enough for cool sleeping!!! What a problem! We turn the 'stat down to 66-67 at night, and it comes back up to 70 in the morning. The coolest room in the house is the family room, and it has a gas fireplace which we use when it feels chilly. Also have a few of those little cube heaters to spot heat the feet. We drink lots of hot tea in the winter, and we wear nice thick cushy slippers around the house. So far, all doors and windows are tight.
Growing up, my grandmother had these snug sacks which are just like snuggies, but better. haha I got one off eBay a few years ago. And I just pulled it out for myself and Miranda saw it and wanted it tonight. LOL I loved these so much when I was a kid at the cottage, so I am happy to see Miranda all warm inside it tonight.
I got really lucky when I found it. It looked brand new, but the pattern I have is clearly old. haha It’s mostly orange. Little 70s throw back. I guess they came out with a newer one with the same name that looks much more like a modern snuggie. I looked on eBay and there’s one for sale for $75. Yikes!
Mine is similar to the picture below. It’s basically a quilt with a zipper and snaps to make arms.
Update: We’ve been turning the furnace off completely at night. Even with our super cold temps recently, the house temp never went below 62. That’s good sleeping weather for me!!!
We are heating mostly with wood these days. One great addition has been the heated mattress pad. We also have a feather mattress under the bottom sheet.mid winter will find us with the mattress pad on and blankets and a down comforter maybe too. We both like it warm.
@Fru_Gal I’ve never tried Polar Tech? I’ll have to check it out.
I spend most of the winter shivering because I refuse to turn the heat up.
We bundle up and snuggle up, but I can never seem to get warm.
Tonight is one of those nights, which is ridiculous, because it’s 50 degrees outside
But when it was 80 on Monday, 50 on Thursday feels frigid
I told the kids, by February, we’ll be wearing shorts on a day when it’s 50!
I will check them out! Thank you!
DD just started complaining this morning, "When are you guys gonna turn the heat on???"
Suck it up, buttercup. You’ve got a long winter ahead!
I must be cold too. Spent most of the past while looking up blankets and throws, while under the covers sipping coffee. DH makes it and brings it to me. Blessed I am!
Anyway, thought of Sara and Amy when I found the foot pocket throw at Berkshire blanket. They call it “cosy all over pocket throw with sleeves”.thinking of getting one or more for gifts…
